What are online auctions?

Simply put, online auctions are a way for you to take something of yours and place it on a website where someone else can buy it. These items -- from rubber chickens to furniture and automobiles -- are advertised on a website where they are available to anyone anywhere in the world! Once someone sees your item and determines it is something they want, they will put a bid on your item. When the auction is over the money transaction takes place and the item is shipped to the buyer. You have just completed your first successful auction and been introduced to the exciting world of online auctions!

Of all of the online auction sites on the Internet today, eBay is probably the largest and most popular. With nearly 50 million users worldwide, eBay is used more often than other online shopping venues (based on number of users and amount of time spent on the site compared to other auction and retail websites). Sooner or later you will probably find yourself looking for something on eBay because that’s where all the action is.

There are literally hundreds of auction sites on the Internet. This leads to some confusion about which one might be the best. Some people will simply go with the biggest and most popular website, while others will want to do a little research, see what’s out there, and find another site that better fits their needs. In the long run, signing up with multiple sites is probably a good idea.

But the only way to determine the best website for you is to do your homework, find out what each site offers, look at the features, what does it charge to buy or sell, how images and advertisements are handled, and what kind of customer service the website offers to both the buyer and seller. Because many of these websites are directly associated with web-communities that already have e-commerce sites, they all offer similar options for both buying and selling. In short, eBay does not have the monopoly on the market and there may be another site out there that is a better fit for you.
